God is immutable. This means that his person does not change, his promises do not change, and his purposes do not change. God’s Word is a testament to this fact. My hope as a Christian hangs on this fact.
God’s person does not change. Like our reference verses in Psalm 102 say, all of creation will one day be worn out and, like clothing, be changed and discarded. But, God will remain the same.
God’s promises do not change. After Adam and Eve sinned, God promised a Redeemer. He promised to do for sinful man what he could not do for himself, atone for his own sin. Eternal life with Him was promised to all who looked forward in faith to that Redeemer, and since His coming, that same promise is for all who look back in faith to Him. The Bible’s purpose is to lead us to faith in God’s promised Redeemer.
God’s purposes do not change. The ultimate purpose of the universe is to display the greatness of the glory of the grace of God. He does this by calling out a people to freely pour out his grace upon. “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” (Eph. 1:4-6)

I agree with both you and Chris, that we can draw the greatest hope and comfort from the Truth that God, nor His Word, ever changes. We can trust Him to always do as He says because of Who He Is. Nothing else in this life can be counted on, yet we can completely trust in the Character and Name of our Everlasting and Unchanging God, the LORD of all and Lover of our souls.
I like how you pointed out that "my hope as a Christian hangs on this fact." That is so true. We are basing our entire existence (in this life and the next) on the fact that God himself does not change and neither do his promises/purposes.
