Psalm 6

Has your bed ever become flooded by your tears?

David's was. David is agonizing over some unpleasant discipline he's enduring from God. Some commentators speculate that he is enduring the natural physical consequences that come from sinful, careless living. At any rate, David begs God for mercy. David doesn't try to excuse his sin. In fact, in addition to telling God how miserable he is physically, he adds that his soul is in anguish. I would suppose this is David showing his remorse.

I love reading the book of Psalms because they cover an array of emotions. And always, when the writer is complaining to God or pleading for Him to destroy his enemies (David does use some strong words at times), each writer always ends with some form of thanks to God or praise for His greatness or His faithfulness.

Today's psalm is no different. After David's cry to God for His mercy, kindness that David knows is undeserved, he finishes this psalm with confidence, acknowledging that God has heard him and has accepted his prayer.

Next time your bed is flooded with tears, real tears that come from real pain, remember that God is listening. It may seem that no one else cares. The thing that causes your crying may seem hopeless. Your tears may be in private, but your cries to Him are not. God hears. God knows. God loves.
