God is Sovereign - Day 5

Picture it. Jeremiah, prophet of God, is detained in Jerusalem, which is being besieged by the Babylonians. God had told Jeremiah this would happen (Jer. 32:3), but King Zedekiah, the leader of Judah, didn't appreciate the news and so, Jeremiah was "shut up in the court of the guard." Listen to Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 32:17 "Ah Lord God! Behold, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by Thy great power and by Thine outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for Thee who showest lovingkindness to thousands, but repayest the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The Lord of Hosts is His name: great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men..." Notice that Jeremiah did not ask to be released. He did not ask for the siege to end.

Then Jeremiah reminds God (!) of the current situation facing His people and God answers Jeremiah in v. 27---"Behold I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is anything too difficult for me?" In this time of turmoil, Jeremiah worships God. Jeremiah chooses to focus on God's steady faithfulness to His unfaithful people.

Read the promises God gave his people -- verses 37-42. Verse 42, "For thus says the Lord, 'Just as I brought all this calamity on this people, so I am going to bring on them all the good that I am promising them.'"

Jeremiah counted on God's sovereignty. He depended on God being in control over his life, Judah, the Babylonians, and the future of God's people forever. Jeremiah trusted a God that is Sovereign of all existence (people, goverenments, wars, monetary systems, disputes, weather patterns...you get the idea)---past, present and future.

The God of Jeremiah is the same today as He was in Jeremiah's day.

Nothing is too powerful for Him (v. 17). His promises to His people are eternal. He sees what is happening in the lives of His people and chooses to be intimately involved (v 19 & 24 & 40). He controls the future--He knows what will happen to us today, He knows what our families will face tomorrow. He is the sovereign ruler of the universe and we exist purely at his pleasure. He owes us nothing---we owe Him everything, yet He chooses to give His people eternal promises of salvation, provision, His presence...and the list goes on. What a mighty God we serve.
